Why Measuring Matters
Order a pole that's too short and your curtains won't cover the window. Too long and it'll look awkward and may be difficult to fit. Taking five minutes to measure properly before you order will save you the hassle of returns and delays — so here's exactly how to do it.
What You'll Need
A steel tape measure (fabric tapes can stretch and give inaccurate readings), a pencil, and something to note your measurements down. A spirit level is helpful if you want to mark bracket positions at the same time.
Step 1: Decide Where the Pole Will Sit
First, decide how high above the window frame you want the pole. As a general rule, mounting the pole 10–15cm above the top of the window frame gives a classic, proportional look. For a more dramatic, height-enhancing effect — particularly popular in modern interiors — you can mount closer to the ceiling.
Also decide how far the pole will extend beyond the window frame on each side. 15–20cm either side is the standard recommendation: this lets the curtains stack back clear of the glass when open, maximising light.
Step 2: Measure the Pole Width
Measure the width of your window frame, then add your chosen overhang on each side. For example:
Window frame width: 120cm
Plus 15cm each side: 120 + 15 + 15 = 150cm total pole length
If you're using a extendable curtain pole, make sure your measurement falls within the pole's minimum and maximum range.
Step 3: Allow for Finials
Don't forget that finials add length beyond the pole brackets. Most finials add 5–8cm per side. If space is tight — for example in an alcove or recess — factor this in when choosing your pole length, or opt for a style with shorter, more compact finials.
Step 4: Mark Your Bracket Positions
For poles up to 150cm, two end brackets are usually sufficient. For poles over 150cm, you'll need at least one central support bracket to prevent bowing — especially important with heavier curtains. Mark bracket positions lightly in pencil before drilling, and use a spirit level to ensure they're aligned.
Measuring for Curtain Tracks
Tracks are measured the same way as poles for width. However, because tracks sit flush to the ceiling or wall without finials, you simply measure the total span you want the track to cover — typically the full window width plus 15–20cm each side so curtains can draw back fully.
For bay windows, measure each section of the bay individually and note the angles between sections — this will determine whether you need a flexible track or pre-bent rigid sections.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Measuring only the glass, not the frame — always measure the full frame width as your starting point.
Forgetting the stack-back — if curtains can't pull clear of the glass, you'll lose light even when they're open.
Not accounting for finial projection — especially in alcoves or between two walls.
Using a fabric tape — always use a rigid steel tape for accuracy.
